What began in 1993 with a focus on pure and ultrapure water has evolved into a company that today also leads in TOC analysis, amino acid analysis, and ion chromatography – backed by in-house systems, proprietary sensors, tailored services, and a global distribution network.
In this interview, founders Emil and Petra Flindt reflect on the early days, the pivotal decisions that fueled growth, and the milestones that defined membraPure’s journey. We talk about values, technology, and the enduring passion it takes to guide a company successfully through three decades of innovation.
What inspired you to start a company for laboratory equipment 30 years ago?
After 17 years of employment, we began to consider becoming self-employed. This decision was driven by a desire for more personal responsibility and freedom. After many in-depth conversations between my wife and me, we decided to take the leap and start our own business.
Which moments or achievements from that time are still unforgettable to you today?
December 22, 1994 – when the two of us reached one million Deutsche Marks in sales.
What was the greatest challenge – and how did you overcome it?
When our supplier for ultrapure water systems failed, we decided to start building such systems ourselves. Looking back, that was the key to our success, because since then we’ve been able to incorporate customer wishes and feedback directly and individually into our products.
Which values have guided your actions as managing directors over the years?
Mutual respect, creating a family-like environment, and giving employees the freedom to grow.
What advice would you give your younger self if you could start over?
You and your partner must be aware that strong cohesion is essential – even when times get tough. Giving up is not an option. Challenges can also lead to new paths.
Have there been innovations that particularly influenced your business?
A decisive factor has been the digitalization of processes and communication with our customers through various channels – trade fairs and events, but also social media platforms such as LinkedIn and Instagram.
What was important for you to pass on to your son Erdmann as the new management for the company’s future?
An open management style, the continuous development of our products, and the diversification of our product portfolio ensure competitiveness – because only with innovation and adaptability can one remain successful in the market.
How does it feel to accompany the company from an observer’s role these past years?
It gives us great joy to see how the company continues to develop.
If you had to say in one sentence what you are most proud of – what would it be?
That our company has grown so much over the years and that Erdmann has found his own way to further develop it.
The conversation with the founders of membraPure shows: Behind every innovation lies a foundation of experience, curiosity, and the will to create individual and high-quality solutions. Even though the day-to-day operations are now in other hands, their vision, principles, and commitment to quality live on in every ultrapure water system, every TOC analyzer, every amino acid analysis, and every customer interaction.
membraPure remains an example of how corporate history is shaped by technical excellence and strong leadership personalities – and a reminder to all of us to look not only at products but also at the people behind them.
A heartfelt thank you to Emil and Petra Flindt for this inspiring conversation – we wish you all the best for the future!
