Environmental impacts caused by the company’s activities must be reduced and offset as far as possible. The associated measures must be implemented in a compatible and realistic manner. An important part of our corporate culture is to take responsibility for our environment. For all of us, this means much more than just “greenwashing”. We have therefore taken a closer look at our company and brought experts from the company CO2-positiv! on board.
Sustainability has long since moved from being a marketing issue to a core topic of any corporate strategy, and it will not lose its long-term importance even in these difficult times.
Erdmann Flindt, CEO
MembraPure is committed to continue to operate and grow the business with integrity, and responsibly, while protecting and investing in the environment as well as our employees.
We’ve not only taken a closer look at our energy consumption and source but also our operations and even office live.
As a company, we need to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible. At the same time, we are supporting a carbon offsetting project in Panama as well as local projects.
membraPure is preparing the carbon footprint for Scope 1 + 2 + 3 since 2021, and the unavoidable emissions incurred have been offset with high-quality CO2 certificates.
We are optimistic that we can achieve our goal of being a carbon neutral company in 2027, probably even sooner.
Sustainability is already an important and accepted topic in our company and we would like to further promote awareness for sustainable development of the company through internal communication, awareness raising among employees and versatile activities.
Sustainability is an investment in the future. In cooperation with our employees and CO2-positiv! we have worked out the 4 basic pillars of our sustainability strategy:
CO2 Balance
CO2 Reduction
Employees
Emission compensation
Our goal is to be a climate-neutral company by 2027. We will continuously evaluate and improve our process.
membraPure encourages and supports its employees to participate in local projects such as “City Cycling – Cycling for a Good Climate”. To do something for society and in a broader sense, the world, membraPure makes annual donations to charitable organizations on behalf of its employees. Furthermore, local and social support projects are also supported.
In collaboration with the company CO2-positiv! membraPure has created a CO2 balance for the year 2020 based on the “Greenhouse Gas Protocol” (also known as the “GHG Protocol”) for balancing greenhouse gas emissions.
The carbon footprint serves as a means to calculate the climate impact of corporate activities and consists of 3 parts: Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (indirect emissions), and Scope 3 (other indirect emissions).
For 2020, scope 1 + 2 were calculated and the resulting emissions were then also offset. Since 2021, Scope 1 + 2 + 3 were recorded and thus membraPure is a climate neutral company in 2021 after emissions offsetting.
Employees have formed a working group to plan and implement sustainable projects in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. There were many good ideas on how the company can make internal operations/processes even more sustainable, as well as what can be done for the environment, e.g. planting trees and a wildflower meadow for bees on the company premises.
Also, membraPure has started some projects for employees. Among them:
As well as the 3 R’s (Reduce, Re-use, Recycle):
Since May, we have been working with a local beekeeper (Maxbee) and have since had a hive on our company premises.
Bees are responsible for pollinating about a third of the food we eat. Without bees, many of the fruits, vegetables and nuts we enjoy every day would not exist. But bees face many threats, including habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change, all of which are causing their populations to decline. That’s why it’s so important to protect and preserve these vital pollinators.
Through our partnership, we aim to create a safe haven for these industrious pollinators and do our part to ensure their well-being. Our dedicated staff works closely with our beekeeper to ensure the bees have everything they need to thrive and flourish.
Between the years 1990 and 2010, Tanzania lost 19.4% – about eight million hectares – of its forest area. To reverse this trend, this reforestation project was launched in Tanzania’s southern highlands, replanting pine and eucalyptus forests in Uchindile and Mapanda districts with active support from local communities.
CO2OL Tropical Mix is certified under the renowned Gold Standard for land use and forestry projects, and the cocoa production areas have been the first agroforestry systems to be certified under the Gold Standard. The focus of this project is the reforestation of mixed forests, cacao cultivation and sustainable timber production for the protection of biodiversity and the restoration of the forest ecosystem in Panama.
